Tiraspol è la capitale e il centro amministrativo della non riconosciuta Repubblica Moldava Pridnestroviana (Transnistria). La città si trova sulla riva orientale del fiume Dniester. È nota per essere una delle poche città che non sono ancora ampiamente cambiate da quando facevano parte dell'Unione Sovietica. Ci sono ancora molte statue di Lenin e accanto ai dipinti di Stalin ci sono quelli di Che Guevara. La città è anche sede della società Elektromash, di cui il presidente Igor Smirnov è stato direttore generale: specializzata in prodotti elettrici, la società è sospettata di fare da copertura alla vendita illegale di armi destinate al terrorismo internazionale.
