I primi indiani sono arrivati nell'Agro Pontino negli anni '80, prevalentemente dal Punjab e sono ferventi Sikh. In questo ultimo decennio sono diventati i braccianti della pianura pontina sostituendosi quasi completamente all'ondata migratoria precedente rappresentata dai lavoratori dell'Est Europa.
La loro giornata lavorativa inizia alle 5.30 del mattino. Si lavora dalle 13 alle 14 ore, con una sola ora per la pausa pranzo. Le paghe sono da fame: dai 2.50 ai 3.50 euro l'ora, ma anche meno quando si registrano fenomeni di caporalato. In prevalenza si tratta di braccianti impiegati in nero. La terra è tanto fertile, ma soffre della crisi economica generale e della penetrazione della criminalità organizzata che è stata capillare, specie nella pianura pontina: racket, estorsioni, controllo dell'edilizia e dell' agroalimentare.
