Bethlehem (Arabic: بيت لحم‎ ; Hebrew: בֵּית לֶחֶם‎ ; lit "House of Bread;" ) is a Palestinian city located in the central West Bank, neighboring south Jerusalem, with a population of about 25,000 people.[4][5] It is the capital of the Bethlehem Governorate of Palestinian Authority. The economy is primarily tourist-driven. The Hebrew Bible identifies Bethlehem as the city David was from. The New Testament identifies Bethlehem as the birthplace of Jesus. The town is inhabited by one of the oldest Christian communities in the world, although the size of the community has shrunk due to emigration.

Jenin (Arabic: جنين, Ǧinīn, Hebrew: ג'נין‎) is a Palestinian city in the northern West Bank. It serves as the administrative center of the Jenin Governorate and is a major agricultural center for the surrounding towns. In 2007 the city had a population of 39,004. Jenin is under the administration of the Palestinian Authority.During the al-Aqsa Intifada, Israel launched Operation Defensive Shield with the stated aim of dismantling terrorist infrastructure so as to curb suicide bombings and other militant activities. The army encircled and entered six major Palestinian population centers in the West Bank, among them Jenin. During the Battle of Jenin in April 2002, 23 Israeli soldiers and 52 Palestinians, including militants, were killed. Human Rights Watch reported that the refugee camp, which was the major battleground, suffered extensive damage. Israel, however, said that the numbers and details given by HRW were exaggerations. Over the following years, Jenin was subject to extended curfews and targeted killings.
